If you are a web design agency or a freelance developer, you probably hear your clients ask "Where should we host our website?" quite often. Sending each client to a different hosting company makes management harder and takes part of the client relationship out of your hands. Reseller hosting is a solution to this need: it lets you offer hosting services to your clients under your own brand without building your own server infrastructure.

What is reseller hosting?

Reseller hosting is a service that lets you buy a set amount of disk space, traffic and account quota from a hosting provider, divide these resources into separate hosting accounts, and sell those accounts to third parties with packages and prices you define yourself. Server hardware, network connectivity, the data centre and maintenance of server software remain the provider's responsibility, while you focus on the client relationship, sales and first-level support.

To put it simply: the provider builds and maintains the building, and you rent out the flats in it under your own brand. Your clients sign a contract with you, receive their invoices from you and bring their problems to you.

How do WHM and cPanel work?

In Turkey, most reseller hosting services are offered on cPanel infrastructure, which consists of two layers:

  • WHM (Web Host Manager): The management panel you use as a reseller. From here you define your hosting packages (limits such as disk space, traffic, email accounts and number of databases), create, suspend and delete accounts for your clients, and monitor their resource usage.
  • cPanel: The panel where your clients manage their own accounts. Each client sees only their own files, email accounts, databases and domain settings, and cannot access other clients' accounts.

With a reseller account, you do not have root access to the server. Updating server software, security patches and hardware are the provider's job. This reduces your technical workload but also limits your freedom to change the server configuration. Because of cPanel's licensing model based on the number of accounts, the number of accounts you can create in reseller packages is usually capped; when choosing a package, you should look at the account limit as well as disk space and traffic.

White-label and private nameservers

One of the most important features of reseller hosting is white-label service: your clients deal with your brand without seeing which provider delivers the service in the background. Its main building blocks are:

  • Private nameservers: Instead of the provider's nameservers, your clients point their domains to nameservers carrying your own brand, such as ns1.yourbrand.com and ns2.yourbrand.com. To do this, you need to create child nameserver (glue) records pointing to the IP addresses given by the provider, through the registrar of your own domain.
  • Branded panel and notifications: Logo and theme customisation in cPanel, your own support email address and panel access addresses under your own domain.
  • Your own billing and support system: Managing orders, invoices and support tickets on your own website or client portal.

Who is reseller hosting for?

  • Web design and digital agencies: Those who want to manage the sites they design from a single panel and turn hosting into a recurring revenue stream.
  • Freelance designers and developers: Those who want to offer maintenance and hosting together with the projects they deliver.
  • IT consultants: Those who provide email, website and domain services to small businesses from a single source.
  • Entrepreneurs who want to build a hosting brand: Those who want to test the market before investing in servers.
  • Businesses managing many websites: Those who want to host each site in a separate account isolated from the others.

If you have only one website, reseller hosting is unnecessary; a standard web hosting package is a much better fit.

What to look for when choosing a reseller hosting provider

Even though your clients will not see your provider, every outage and slowdown they experience is attributed to your brand. So treat choosing a provider like choosing a business partner to whom you entrust your own reputation:

  • Account isolation: Heavy traffic or a security vulnerability on one client's account should not affect other accounts. Ask which technologies the provider uses for per-account resource limits and isolation.
  • Backup policy: Find out how often backups are taken, where they are stored and how a single account can be restored.
  • Quality of second-level support: How quickly and competently the provider responds to a problem you cannot solve sets the upper limit of the service you can offer your clients.
  • Contract terms: The white-label commitment, non-solicitation of your clients, how far in advance price changes will be announced and the period allowed for moving your clients when the contract ends should all be set out in writing.

Pricing your packages

As a reseller, the most critical decision is how to price your own packages. The right price is not found simply by adding a profit margin to what you pay the provider. For a sound calculation, consider the following items together:

  • Direct costs: The reseller package fee, any billing software licence, payment provider commissions, and the cost of domains and SSL certificates you purchase on behalf of your clients.
  • Indirect costs: The time you spend on support, accounting and tax expenses, and the cost of your website and marketing.
  • Utilisation rate: How much of your reseller package's resources you can actually sell. Calculate your cost per account by dividing your total monthly cost by your number of active clients; dividing by the package's theoretical capacity will mislead you.
  • Exchange rate and price changes: Prices for items such as domains and SSL can be changed by registrars and certificate authorities. Factor this risk into your annual sales.

Rather than competing on price, offering value is usually a more sustainable path for resellers. Including services such as setup, regular maintenance, update tracking, backup checks and fast local support in your packages ensures that clients pay not just for disk space but for the trust they place in you. Structure package limits in tiers so that clients can move up to a higher package as their needs grow.

Campaigns with a discounted first year and a higher renewal price can win clients, but if you do not state the renewal price clearly from the start, you will lose trust. The quality of service you can offer your clients is also determined by your provider's infrastructure; when choosing a provider, apply the criteria in our guide to web hosting selection criteria to your own infrastructure.

Legal obligations in Turkey

Reseller hosting is a commercial activity, and you are the seller in relation to your clients. Certain legal obligations therefore fall directly on you:

  • Tax and invoicing: To issue invoices to your clients, you must be registered as a taxpayer. Discuss with your financial advisor whether to set up a sole proprietorship or a limited/joint-stock company, and what your e-Invoice/e-Archive (Turkey's electronic invoicing systems) obligations are.
  • Consumer legislation: If you sell online to individual consumers, you must prepare a pre-information form and a distance sales contract (the mandatory agreement for online sales under Turkish law) in accordance with Consumer Protection Law No. 6502 and the Regulation on Distance Contracts.
  • KVKK: With regard to your own clients' personal data, you are the data controller within the meaning of KVKK (Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698). Preparing a privacy notice, storing data securely and responding to requests are your obligations. The company providing the infrastructure is generally in the position of a data processor acting on your behalf with respect to this data; it is important that this relationship is clearly set out in a contract.
  • Law No. 5651: Because you host other people's content, you need to respond quickly to abuse reports and notices of unlawful content under Law No. 5651 (the Turkish law regulating internet publications). Those who provide hosting commercially may also have additional obligations towards the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK); you are advised to assess your own situation with a lawyer.
  • Commercial electronic messages: For campaign and promotional emails, you must obtain recipients' consent under Law No. 6563.

Registering your clients' domains in their own names is also important for both compliance and trust. For Kilitkutu resellers, these matters are set out in detail in the Reseller Agreement.

Support model

Support in reseller hosting usually works on two levels. First-level support is you: the first point of contact for all your clients' questions and problems, such as email setup, panel usage, billing questions and the initial diagnosis of why a site will not load. Problems caused by the infrastructure, server or network are passed on to your provider; this is second-level support.

Set the response times you promise your clients according to your own capacity. Do not promise 24/7 support if you cannot respond at midnight. A knowledge base covering frequently asked questions will noticeably reduce your support workload.

Growth path: VPS, VDS and dedicated

Reseller hosting is a low-risk way to start a hosting business, but it does not have to be the final stop. As your number of clients grows, the following needs may arise: approaching package limits, wanting to install server-specific software, full control over PHP or database versions, or dedicated resources for certain clients. At this point, moving to a VPS or VDS with your own cPanel/WHM licence, and then to dedicated (physical) servers when needed, is a natural growth path. Remember: root access gives you more control, but it also transfers responsibility for server security, updates and backups to you.

The most common mistakes

  • Setting prices based only on competitors: Prices that do not account for your support time and indirect costs lead to losses as your client base grows.
  • "Unlimited" promises: Promising unlimited disk space or traffic when your own resources are limited creates both technical and legal problems.
  • Leaving backups entirely to the provider: Provider backups are often a service convenience; create your own independent backup plan for critical client data.
  • Registering domains in your own name: This causes serious disputes when a client wants to leave.
  • Selling without contracts and KVKK documents: When something goes wrong, you are left unprotected towards both your client and the supervisory authorities.
  • Ignoring abuse reports: A single client sending spam or running a phishing site can cause your entire account to be suspended.
